Thank you all for being here. Some of you traveled a long way, and she would have been embarrassed by the fuss. I am not much of a public speaker, so I wrote a few things down. I want to tell you about the person I knew, about a few moments that still make us smile, and about what she leaves with each of us. We will have time to talk afterward. First, the stories.
Default pace: 140 words per minute, our reference for a eulogy spoken slowly, with pauses (the same pace used for our examples and personalized eulogies). For comparison, the average adult reads aloud at about 183 words per minute (Brysbaert, 2019). Measuring yourself gives your real pace.
How to use the result
- Over your time? Cut a story rather than trimming every sentence. One story told well does more than three rushed ones.
- Under your time? That is rarely a problem. A short, sincere eulogy is better than a long one. If you need more, add one specific memory, not more adjectives.
- Leave room for pauses. Laughter, a catch in the voice, a moment to look up: plan for the eulogy to run a little longer than the calculation.
