Celebration of life

Celebration of life: what it is and how to plan one

A celebration of life is a gathering to remember someone that focuses on their life more than on mourning. It can happen after a private burial or cremation, weeks or months later, in a home, a park, a restaurant or a hall. It is usually less formal than a funeral, with stories, music, food and sometimes a toast.

Families can combine them: a private burial followed by a larger celebration of life later is common.

How to plan one

  1. Choose a date that allows key people to travel.
  2. Choose a place that fits the person: a home, a park shelter, a favorite restaurant, a community hall, a boat. Check capacity and rules for food, alcohol and music.
  3. Choose a host, someone comfortable speaking, to welcome people and keep the time.
  4. Plan the heart of it: a few prepared speakers, a slideshow or photo table, an open microphone, a toast, favorite music.
  5. Plan food and drink: potluck, catering or the person's favorite dish.
  6. Send invitations with the date, time, place, dress guidance and whether children are welcome.

For speeches, see celebration of life speech examples; for a printed program, the funeral program template works for a celebration too.

What to wear

Unless the invitation says otherwise, smart casual in calm colors is safe, and any color or theme the family asks for is part of the tribute. Details by setting and season: what to wear to a celebration of life.

Common questions

What is the difference between a funeral and a celebration of life?

A funeral usually takes place soon after the death, with the body or ashes present, and follows a religious or traditional order. A celebration of life is often held later, may have no body present, and is more informal, with stories, music and food.

What is the difference between a memorial service and a celebration of life?

Both take place without the body present. A memorial service is often more structured, sometimes religious, and more solemn; a celebration of life tends to be lighter and more personal. Many families use the words interchangeably.

What do you wear to a celebration of life?

Follow the invitation. Without instructions, wear what you would wear to a nice dinner, in muted colors. Some families ask guests to wear the person's favorite color or a team shirt; the invitation will say so.

How long after a death is a celebration of life held?

Anywhere from a few days to several months later. Families often wait so that relatives can travel, the weather is better or they have time to plan.
