Sympathy messages
Condolence messages for a coworker
A message to a grieving coworker should be kind, brief and respectful of their privacy. Say you are sorry, name the relationship ("your father"), and, if you can, lighten their load at work. A group card from the team is common; each person adds a short personal line.

Etiquette at work
- Keep it about them, not the workplace: one line about work at most.
- Do not ask about the cause of death or the circumstances.
- Respect privacy: some people want to talk, others want work to be normal. Take your cue from them.
- When they come back, a simple "Good to see you. I've been thinking of you" is enough.

When a coworker has died
The team often sends a card to the family. Families treasure hearing how their person was at work.
To the family
warmDear Mendez family, we worked with Carlos every day for eleven years. He trained half of our team, never lost his patience, and always made the coffee before anyone else arrived. We miss him more than we can say, and we are so sorry for your loss.

Common questions
What do you write in a sympathy card for a coworker?
A short, warm line such as "I'm so sorry about your mother. Thinking of you and your family." Add a practical note if true ("Don't worry about the project, we have it covered") and sign your full name.
Should I go to a coworker's family member's funeral?
If the service is public and you are close to the coworker, attending is usually appreciated. Otherwise, a card is enough. Some teams send one or two people on behalf of everyone.
What do you say when a coworker dies?
To the family, a card from the team with a short memory of the person at work means a great deal. At work, give colleagues time to grieve, and follow the family's wishes about what to share.
