Celebration of life
What to wear to a celebration of life
Unless the invitation says otherwise, wear what you would wear to a nice dinner, in calm colors. Black is never wrong but not required. If the family asks for a color, a team shirt or "come as you are," follow it: dressing as asked is part of the tribute.

Start with the invitation
The invitation is your dress code. Look for:
- A color or a theme: "wear purple," "Hawaiian shirts welcome," "wear your team jersey." Follow it; the family chose it for a reason.
- "Casual," "come as you are": clean, comfortable, respectful clothes.
- The place: a church or funeral home suggests the same clothes as a funeral; a park, a beach or a backyard suggests something more relaxed.
- Nothing at all: smart casual in calm colors is the safe choice.
If you are unsure, ask a close friend of the family, or dress one step more formal than you think; you can always take off a jacket.
Outfit ideas by setting
| Setting | Women | Men | Children |
|---|---|---|---|
| Church, funeral home, hall | Dress or skirt below the knee, or trousers and a blouse; cardigan or blazer | Dress trousers, collared shirt, optional jacket and tie | Their nicest everyday clothes |
| Restaurant or home | Trousers or skirt with a sweater or blouse | Chinos, collared shirt or neat sweater | Clean, simple clothes |
| Park, beach, backyard | Comfortable trousers or a sundress, flat shoes | Chinos or dark jeans, polo or button-down | Play-ready but neat |
| "Wear bright colors" | A colorful top, dress or scarf | A colorful shirt or tie | A favorite colorful shirt |
Outdoor and seasonal details
- Grass or sand: flat shoes. Heels sink.
- Summer: light fabrics, a hat, sunglasses you can take off when someone speaks.
- Winter: a dark coat covers almost anything underneath.
- Long gatherings: layers, especially if there is food and a program of speakers.
What to avoid
- Anything that draws attention to you: very bright colors when none were asked for, slogans, very casual athletic wear.
- Clothes you will fuss with during the speeches.
- White as the main color at a traditional gathering unless the family asks for it; some cultures and families wear white for mourning, and the invitation will tell you.
When the family sets a theme
A theme is a way of including everyone in the tribute. You might see:
- The person's favorite color.
- A team jersey or college colors.
- Their style: flannel shirts for a man who lived in them, a flower in the hair for a gardener.
- "Come as you are", often from families who knew the person hated formality.
You do not need to buy anything. One item in the right color is enough.
What to wear if you are speaking
If you are giving a tribute, choose something you are comfortable standing in for a few minutes, with a pocket for your notes if possible. See celebration of life speech examples for what to say, and the celebration of life guide for how these gatherings usually unfold.
Common questions
Do you wear black to a celebration of life?
You can, but you do not have to. Many families choose a celebration of life to make the day feel lighter, and dark neutrals, navy, gray, earth tones or soft colors are all fine unless the invitation asks for something specific.
Can you wear jeans to a celebration of life?
Dark, clean jeans with a nice top or shirt are usually fine for an informal gathering in a home, a park or a backyard. For a gathering in a church, hall or restaurant, choose trousers or a skirt instead, unless the family says "casual."
What if the invitation says "wear something bright"?
Then wear it. Families ask for bright colors because the person loved them, or because they want the day to feel like a celebration. You do not need a new outfit; a colorful shirt, scarf or tie is enough.
